PAGE  PAGE - 10 - The Cultural Differences And Translational Methods Of English And Chinese Idioms 【Abstract】 This article will analyze the cultural differences between English and Chinese idioms from the points of geography, custom, religion, ways of thinking and value orientations. In idiom translation, the first problem is to recognize the idioms. With a view to the linguistic elements and cultural elements, foreignization will be the preferred strategy of idiom translation. Literal translation, borrowing translation and liberal translation are the three main methods to translate idioms between languages. 【Key Words】 idioms; cultural differences; translation 【摘要】 本文从地理环境、风俗习惯、宗教信仰、思维方式和价值观等几个方面分析了英汉习语中所体现的英汉文化差异.习语翻译的前提就是要先辨认出习语。由于习语的语言特点特别是习语中的大量文化因素,翻译习语时以异化战略为主。习语翻译的主要方法 通常有直译法、同义习语套用法和意译法。 【关键词】 习语; 文化差异;翻译 Ⅰ. Introduction An idiom is an expression whose meaning does not seem to follow logically from the combination of the meaning of its parts; by the rules of language the term could be defined as a language oddity. It is probably the case that every human language has idioms. An idiom is an indivisible part of both the Chinese language and the English language. There is no way to avoid using idioms in the progress of information exchanging in communications. It is the cream in the progress of cross language communication associated with many aspects of cultural elements. Also idioms are the fruit of human being’s wisdom. They are most useful and most frequently used through the cross language communications and message transition. During the formation of history and human society, they “recorded the histories of different races, and reflected the cultural attitudes of minds as well as the ways of thinking in different peoples”.
