Abstract The Czech Geological Survey has been
conducting geological mapping on the scale 1:50,000 in
several areas of Nicaragua and El Salvador since 1997.
In 2004, an area of approximately 750 km2 was studied
in the northern parts of the La Libertad, San Salvador,
and Cuscatla?n districts in El Salvador from the per-
spective of geological hazards and hydrogeology. A
basic description of the water cycle conditions and
ground water units of this area were made for the first
time, including the study of infiltration zones, transit
zones, and zones of drainage. A 1:50,000 scale hydro-
geological map, and a vulnerability map for one se-
lected drainage area of the R??o Matizate river were
designed. The basic hydrogeological conditions, hyd-
rochemical groundwater characteristics, the potential
for groundwater contamination, and the main sources
of pollution were also described.

Introduction
This study presents the ground water investigation of a
selected area in El Salvador (Fig. 1), where an initial
regional hydrogeological survey is underway. The
studied area has been the subject of a few local surveys
to locate sources of potable water for municipal and
village water supplies (Table 1). Investigations re-
vealed inadequate pre-existing hydrogeological data.
The means for protecting ground water, and knowl-
edge about possible water contamination were likewise
insufficient.
Methods
The following basic ground water parameters were
measured throughout the area of interest: pH,
groundwater levels, conductivity, and temperature of
ground water from springs, wells, and boreholes
