Included are specific requirements for both ISO 3601-3 and MIL-STD-413C. Many other standards specify quality acceptance criteria for O-rings, however most of those standards are being driven by ISO 3601-3. How to Inspect for Surface Imperfection Control Use the drawings and charts below showing surface imperfections and common terminology for the purpose of inspection and determination of acceptability. Establish quantitative levels of acceptance for O-rings relative to surface imperfection type, size, and quantity. Both the supplier and end-user should be able to determine a defect without the aid of magnification or actual measurement. For visual comparison and reference, inspectors should have the appropriate measuring equipment. Acceptance or rejection of shipments shall be determined by statistical quality sampling at the time of purchase order date. An imperfection is acceptable if no larger than the dimensional tolerances given for each type of imperfection. Bloom or surface dust should be removed to facilitate inspection. O-rings shall be visually inspected by the unaided eye under a minimum of 400 foot-candles of illumination. Inspection aided by magnification is permitted for reference purposes only. Foreign Material Foreign Material - Any extraneous matter (contamination, dirt, etc.) embedded in the surface of the O-ring.
