Section 01 Universal logic: towards a general theory of logics Jean-Yves Beziau Swiss National Science Foundation, Institute of Logic, University of Neucha?tel, Neucha?tel, Switzerland jean-yves.beziau@unine.ch 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification. 03B22 Universal logic is not a new logic, but a general theory of logics, considered as mathematical structures, much in the same way that universal algebra is a general theory of algebraic structures. The idea to consider logics in such an abstract way goes back to the work of Tarski on consequence operator at the end of the 1920s and was subsequently developed mainly in Poland by people like Lindenbaum, Los? and Suszko. The increasing number of logical systems created for many different purposes related in particular to artificial intelligence and computer science, has recently turned the development of universal logic a central task for logicians who have tried to give an account of the very notion of logical system [2]; among the various proposals the structuralist approach appears as fundemantal [3]. The main topics of universal logic are: (T1) The study of general tools and concepts that can be used for the study of the different logical sys- tems and the creation of new ones, including logical matrices, labelled de- ductive systems, Kripke structures. (T2) The systematic and synthetic study of some classes of logics such as non monotonic logics, modal logics, substructural logics, paraconsistent logics and many others. (T3) General formulations of fundamental theorems such as completeness, interpolation, cut-elimination, determining their scope of validity and characterizing those essential features which are independent of a given particular logic. The main problems of universal logic are: (P1) The question of identity between logical structures. (P2) A proper definition of translation of a logic into another one (logica
