Abstract Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804—1864), a novelist and short story writer, is an important figure in the history of American literature. The scarlet letter, Hawthorne’s masterpiece, tells a simple and dramatic story. It was very popular and widely read. It has been considered to be the most famous work of Hawthorne.
