PAGE  PAGE 10 Lecture III (2) Translation of Common English Figures of Speech Objective: Familiarizing the students with the translation methods of some common English figures of speech Procedures: Discuss some questions about translation strategy and translation methods. Introduce the translation of simile, metaphor, oxymoron and zeugma I. Questions for discussion: There are two translation strategies. Which one do you prefer? Why? Some scholars of translation studies hold that the choice of translation strategies is politically important or significant. Do you agree with it or not? For what reasons? What is the difference between literal translation and free translation? In what situation is literal or free translation used? II. Common English figures of speech 1. Figures of speech are ways of making our language figurative and vivid. When we use words in other than their ordinary or literal sense to lend force to an idea, to heighten effect, or to create suggestive imagery, we are said to be speaking or writing figuratively. 2. Common English figures of speech: simile a figure of speech which makes a comparison between two different things having at least one quality or characteristic in common. To make the comparison, words like “as”, “as...as”, “as if” and “like” are used to transfer the quality we associate with one to the other. Metaphor A figure of speech which makes a comparison between two different things, but the comparison is implied rather than stated. Analogy a form of comparison, but unlike simile or metaphor which usually uses comparison on one point of resemblance, analogy draws a parallel between two different things that have several common qualities or points of resemblance. Personification It gives human form of feelings to animals, or life and personal attributes to inanimate objects, or to ideas and abstractions. For example, the wind whistled through the trees.
