Buddhism in daily life Compiled by Bhikkhu Dhammavaro, Buddharatana Monastery of Australia Lay people who have faith in the Triple Gem, when they meet up with Buddhism, some of them admiring the Triple Gem so much that they change drastically from their previous worldly behaviour and start to take on wrong spiritual rites and rituals and adhere to non Buddhist practices, and even change their dresses or discussion topics so much that they veer to the extreme, or even criticizing their friends and family members who don’t take up the Buddhist practice, they are too eager to show the world that they are a good person and a real Buddhist now. In Buddhist practice it is not like that, a Buddhist still live normally and inconspicuously outwardly, but inwardly you change your view and behaviour and adopt the teaching of the Buddha and apply them in your daily life. (1)Recollecting the virtues of the Triple Gem We need to recollect daily the virtues of the Triple Gem as follows: Iti pi so Bhagavā-Araham Sammā-sambuddho. Vijjā-carana sampanno Sugato Lokavidu Anuttarro Purisa-damma-sārathi Satthā deva-manussānam Buddho Bhagavā ti He (The Buddha) indeed is the Blessed One: the Holy One, fully enlightened, endowed with clear vision and virtuous conduct, sublime, the knower of the worlds, the incomparable leader of men to be tamed, the teacher of gods and men, He is enlightened and blessed. Svākkhāto Bhagavatā Dhammo Sanditthiko Akāliko Ehi-passiko Opanāyiko Paccattam veditabbo vi??uhi ti. The Dhamma (Teachings of the Buddha) of the Blessed One is perfectly expounded; to be seen here and now; not delayed in time; inviting one to come and see; onward leading (to Nibbana); to be realized by the wise, each for himself or herself.
