Teaching students how to read those brochures is a practical way of blended learning. However, there are always a lot of words describing the scenery, most of which are adjectives beyond our students’ current vocabulary. I am teaching a class of 28 students who are in senior 2, about 16-17 years old in a foreign languages school. They are currently learning Look Ahead Intermediate, which is the third of the whole textbook series. In this textbook there are a lot of reading materials ranging from biographies to news reports. Students are required to understand them and master the new vocabulary at the same time. Teachers don’t like to teach boring vocabulary, but we have to make test on them. Students are tired of checking their dictionaries, but sometimes they find it very frustrating to understand the article without knowing the meaning of those adjectives. It is vital to teach student how to classify the new words appearing in the article and understand the meaning via text. The aim of my worksheet is to teach students how to go through a original passage by classifying the adjectives according to different topics. Here I use a introductory article of Bali, which is located in Unit 15, chapter 3, of Look Ahead Intermediate. WORKSHEET Getting started 1. When it comes to travel brochure, you might expect to see a lot of adjectives used to describe the beautiful scenery of a certain place. Think about a place of interest in your country and list the possible words you may use to describe them. 2. Discuss your places of interest with you partner and exchange your word list. Reading 1.
