UK Education System Compulsory full-time Education Children must attend school for at least 11 years (5 to 16). If a child does not attend school, the Local Education Authority (LEA) must be satisfied that other appropriate provision is available. Most pupils transfer from primary to secondary school at the age of 11. In ‘middle schools’--- pupils are transferred from primary school at the age of 8 or 9 and then move on to secondary education at the age of 12 or 13. Most secondary schools are comprehensive and do not operate a selective entrance system.
