In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Christian organizations like the Salvation Army, set up in 1865, mixed church with charity. Gradually volunteering became a big part of everyday life. You can see that in the fashion for charity shops in Britain, where people give away their old clothes to resell, the money made going to various good causes. Volunteering is particularly big among young people, and is seen as a way of developing character.
