Mild hypothermia and NSCs transplantation protect against hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy
Neural stem cells (NSCs) transplantation is a useful treatment for ischemic stroke, but apoptosis often occurs in the hypoxic-ischemic environment of the brain after cell transplantation. Wang Lin and his colleagues, Shanghai Jiaotong University, China, hypothesized that mild hypothermia (27–28 °C) combined with NSCs (1.0×105 /μL) transplantation exhibit better neuroprotective effects on hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy than monotherapy. Their experimental results confirm that mild hypothermia combined with NSCs transplantation is superior to monotherapy in the treatment of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and the neuroprotective effects are achieved through anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic mechanisms. The relevant study has been published in Neural Regeneration Research (Vol. 9, No. 19, 2014).
