In Chinese with the word dog idioms are often in a derogatory sense, but dog in English is neutral and praise. Chinese have many idioms covered in the tiger, because in traditional Chinese culture, tiger is considered to be “the beasts of the king”. While the role of the English culture is the lion, please look at the following comparison (the two are not exactly equal, but the meaning is similar); 虎口拔牙 beard the lion (拔狮子的胡子) 狐假虎威 ass in the lions skin (披着狮子皮的驴) 拦路虎 a lion in the way (拦路狮) 摸老虎屁股 twist the lions tail (拨弄狮子尾巴) 虎落平阳被犬欺 Hares may pull dead lions by the beard. (兔子也敢摸死狮子的胡子) 虎头蛇尾In like a lion, out like a lamb. (来的时候像狮子,走的时候却像羊羔。)
