About Dr Xiyu Shi Xiyus is a Research Associate at the Institute for Digital Technologies and his teaching modules include the Internet of Things and Applications, Applied Cryptography and parts of Multimedia over Networks and Introduction to Mobile Communications and Media Clouds. Since 2000, Xiyu has been a major contributor to several high-profile international collaboration projects which have shaped the future of networked media. These projects, including BATS, ROMEO, DIOMEDES, Guardian Angel, BROADWAN, Full Speed and EMBRACE are funded either by the EU’s FP5/6/7 programmes or the EPSRC. His work focuses on DSP HW/SW, multimedia transmission, decoding, rendering, QoE, networking and security over fixed and wireless communication systems. Xiyus research interests include IoT related privacy and security issues, cybersecurity, audio signal processing and multimedia communications. Academic Background Xiyu received a BEng in Radio Engineering from Southeast University, China, in 1984, an MSc in Communication and Electronic Systems from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China, in 1989, and a PhD in Computer Networks from the Royal Military College of Science, Cranfield University in 2002. Xiyu was also a visiting researcher at the Advanced Communication Unit of the Ratherford Appleton Laboratory, Science and Technology Facilities Council, from 1998-2002. Before he moved to the UK in 1998, Xiyu was a Lecturer and an Associate Professor in Electronic Engineering with more than 10 years teaching experience in the School of Information and Control Engineering, University of Petroleum of China. Current Research and Collaborations Xiyus current research includes blind moving source separation (BMSS), privacy preservation and security protection in IoT. The BMSS system is to develop new algorithms of detection, track, separation and awareness of scenes of multiple moving sound objects.
