English 80: Reading and Writing

Prerequisite: Total English Placement Test score of 120 or higher.
Course Description: This class is designed to improve reasoning, reading, and writing skills. It helps students build a strong foundation in these skills for successful performance in college.
Course Objectives: At the end of ten weeks, students in English 80 should be able to do the following:
Reading
use critical reading skills;
reason clearly in oral and written form;
demonstrate literal, inferential, and analytical or critical comprehension;
recognize the main idea as well as the supporting details and conclusions in a reading selection;
use an academic vocabulary;
distinguish between fact and opinion;
critically revise their own writing.
Writing
use critical writing skills;
write effective sentences;
develop and support main ideas;
use an academic vocabulary;
punctuate according to conventions;
use conventional essay and paragraph structure;
edit their own writing using standard, edited American English. (Basic level skills must be exhibited before students can expect passing scores on their essays.)
Course Texts: 1) Flachmann, Kim. Mosaics: Focusing on Essays, 3rd ed.
Upper Saddle River: Prentice Hall, 2005
2) An approved novel
Course Materials: 1) A binder (with dividers) for storing class notes, assignments, and returned work
2) Writing utensil and notebook paper
A small, bound notebook for journal entries
Course texts and materials MUST be brought to every class meeting.
