The S hanghai L uw an SouthEast H osp ital ( Shang hai 200023) Abstract Obj ective T o study the safety over the atlantoodontoid joint of t he cervical spine durin obliquepullin manipulation. Methods T he contact stress of the atlantoodontoid joint in physiolo ic unstable conditions w ith and without pullin andextendin of seven cadaveric specimans of cervical spine w ere observed w ith a biomechanical electric measurin apparatus and obliquepullin device. Results The ratio of contact stress in pullin andextendin condit ion, physiolo ic condit ion and patholo ic condition is 1!12!94. Under normal physiolo ic condition, the stress in posterior extension is reater than that in anterior flex ion, but less t han in neutral position. Conclusion A better option of the manipulation position is to put the patient∀s head at a sli ht flexion when a certain pullin extendin force is applied. In patient with severe de enerative chan es of the cervical spine and unstability, the amplitude of rotation and the force of manipulation should be de creased.
