Finally, it has showed its importance in the history of literature. The novel is about a heart-stirring love story. Actually, since the advent of the novel, everyone has different opnions about it. On the basis of utilitarianism, this thesis tries to analyze Catherine#39;s love tragedy. With the development of capitalism, utilitarianism becomes popular. Under the influence of utilitarianism, Catherine abandons her true love. As a result, her choice results in a tragic love story. This paper tries to analyze the reflect of utilitarianism upon Catherine’s choice of love and her tragic love. Key words Bentham; utilitarianism; Catherine; choice of love 1 从功利主义析《呼啸山庄》中凯瑟琳的悲剧爱情 摘 要 《呼啸山庄》这部备受争议的小说,经历了一百多年的历史洗礼,终于突显了它在文学史上的地位。小说讲述的是一个惊心动魄的爱情故事。事实上,自小说问世以来受到无数人的观点各异的评价。本文从功利主义出发去分析小说中凯瑟琳的爱情悲剧的原因。功利主义思想在资本主义大发展的背景下日渐盛行。而女主角在这种思想的熏陶下,抛弃真爱,最终酿成悲剧。本文着重分析了功利主义在凯瑟琳爱情抉择上的作用,最后得出了凯瑟琳的功利主义心理是造成其爱情悲剧的主要原因的结论。 关键字 边沁;功利主义 ;凯瑟琳 ;爱情抉择 2 Introduction In the history of English literature, Emily Bronte is doubtless one of the most sparkling stars. Her novel Wuthering Heights is always regarded as a mysterious work, a novel which is earth-shaking and out of the ordinary. At the beginning when the novel came out in 1848, it was criticized by readers as an appalling, absurd and meaningless work, a terrifying, disgusting novel .【1】 Since later 19th century, especially in the 20th century, people began to attach great importance to Wuthering Heights. The novel tells a story about love and revenge. Heathcliff was a foundling who was adopted by the master of Wuthering Heights, Earnshaw.
