Under physiolo ical conditions, Nrf2 binds to kelch2like ECH2associated protein21(Keap1) in the cytoplasm, remains inactivated and easy to be de radated. Under oxidative or chemical stress, Keap1modification or Nrf2 phosphorylation result in activation of Nrf2 throu h its dissociation from Keap1. The activated Nrf2 translocates into the nucleus and interacts with ARE. The expression of cytoprotective tar et enes, includin phase Òdetoxifyin enzymes, antioxidant proteins and the molecular proteasomePchaperones is then transactivated in response to the stress.
