Call for papers ‐‐‐‐‐ Special Issue in China Economic Review: ‘Sustainable Food
Consumption in China’

Accompanied by rapid income growth, Chinese consumers have experienced a dramatic nutrition
transition and dietary change. The traditional fiber‐dominated food style has been strongly
influenced by western dietary customs, with more meat consumption and more processed food.
These changes can contribute to a number of environmental, health, international food security and
ethical problems. Thus, we call for papers involving research on “Sustainable Food Consumption in
China”.
The issues raised in addressing “Sustainable Food Consumption” include, but are not limited to, the
following four topics: (1) Increasing use of chemical‐ and energy intensive agriculture and expansion
of irrigated land threaten to cause severe environmental damage; (2) Hunger has given way to over‐
nutrition in China, leading to a significant increase in obesity and its related non‐communicable
diseases; (3) The sheer size of China’s population interacts with its nutrition transition to potentially
impact international food security, particularly for developing countries in Africa and South Asia; (4)
Increasing consumption of animal products leads to a number of ethical issues, not the least of which
is animal welfare.
We welcome all papers dealing with the above and related issues. All submissions will undergo China
Economic Review’s double‐blind reviewing process.
Submission process and deadline:
Submission deadline: Nov. 30, 2015.
Estimated date for the first decision: Feb. 28, 2016.
Estimated date of final decision: May 31,
