A number of scholars had studied the size of urban population of the Son Dynasty in their works. The common approaches they take are to ather pieces of relevant records in historical literature as many as possible, analyze these records inductively, and assume a percenta e of urban population of the country of that time. But the differences of their conclusions are much diversified. Still, population ima e is a topic askin for attention. Actually, it is better to look for different administrative ima es perceived by the Son literati than to treat those records as true demo raph ic data. So, in their writin s, the Son literati, w ith their perceived ima es from the real world, formed a hierarchical structure for cities: a million households for the national capital, a hundred thousand for provincial capitals, ten thousand for perpetual cit ies, and a few thousand or so for county cities. Therefore, to some de ree, at least to the Son literati, administrative status is a more important feature for a city than its real demo raphic scale. In the discussion of urban development of the Son Dynasty, this historical fact should not be ne lected. , , ∃
