Studying the impact of hotkey
feedforward systems on memorization
Thématique : Human-Computer Interaction (HCI)
Advisor: Sylvain Malacria (sylvain.malacria@inria.fr)
Topic
Hotkeys, also called keyboard shortcuts, are keyboard chords that offer a shortcut alternative to
pointer-based selection of commands from toolbars and menus. However, hotkeys still suffer from
a critical usability issue, which is that no matter what, a user who wants to select a command
using its keyboard shortcut has to learn it beforehand, through an explicit memorizing process.
Recent works have proposed feedforward mechanisms such as ExposeHK [2] and IconHK [1]
that allow user to select a command using its keyboard shortcut, without having to memorize the
key combination. However, there has been no investigation of whether or not these feedforward
mechanisms influence hotkey memorization, that is, if users systematically rely on the feedforward
mechanism to perform the hotkey or if they implicitly memorize it.
This project consists in the design and conduction of a controlled experiment that would
investigate the impact of hotkey feedforward systems, such as ExposeHK [1], on the implicit
memorization. The design of this study will build on studies conducted in the field of motor control
and learning theory [3]. The student will implement ExposeHK in a dedicated software that will be
used as software platform to conduct the experiment.
Required skills
- Strong object-oriented programming skills (e.g. Java, C++)
- Basics in experimental design
- A strong interest in Human-Computer Interaction and experimental psychology
