Painted Handrails will not cause harm if you touch them But! When grinded on, sandblasted, or manually scraped, the paint/lead will become airborne and may pose a hazard if inhaled or accidentally eaten. ORAL / INGESTION (mostly accidental) From eating or smoking in areas where lead is present or failure to wash hands before doing either. Most Lead compounds DO NOT penetrate through the skin; Exception is tetraethyl lead used in gasoline. SYMPTOMS OF OVER-EXPOSURE Anorexia, metallic taste in mouth, anxiety
