* * Reviews describe new developments of interdisciplinary significance and highlight unresolved questions and future directions. * Here is an example of a review paper that appears in the very prestigious Annual Review of Ecology, Evolution and Systematics. This paper examines the body of literature on climate change to focus on what we know about the ecological changes in the phenology and distribution of plants and animals in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems. * * This methods paper describes sequential extractions used to fractionate four heavy metals from contaminated. * Policy and opinion papers are often points of view that are timely and potentially controversial. They are usually meant to encourage debate or discussion. These types of papers do not present new data. * This is an example of a recent editorial that I wrote for Frontiers in Ecology. This piece talks about the tradeoffs of biofuels and biological security. * Sometimes a significant body of work like a dissertation can produce multiple papers. Here is an example of papers published by Kristin Saltonstall from her thesis. She has two standard research papers in PNAS and Molecular Ecology Two methods papers – on in Molecular Ecology Notes and one in Wetlands And finally an applied research paper in Estuaries * And now we would like to have a discussion, answer questions, and present the results of the exercise that we gave you before the talk * Everybody is interested in the IF of a journal – in fact paying TOO MUCH attention to IF and not paying any attention to other things that are important to know about a journal. * I believe it is important to understand this number, where it comes from, how it is calculated, what it can tell us (or NOT). * * Every scientist and scientific editor knows that impact factors are very important!
