Vowels lead-in When we learn to speak English, we are learning a new way of listening and speaking. The purpose of this textbook is to try to make your ears sharper for the sounds of English and the way the sounds are organized; to help you get familiar with pitch movements of English utterances and the messages they convey; and to help you improve your English pronunciation and intornation. Your improved listening ability will enable you to improve your spoken English. to pronounce correctly the individual speech sounds of English to pronounce correctly the speech sounds in their combinations in isolated words as well as in sentences to speak fluently with correct rhythm, including the correct placement of stresses and pauses and the transition of sounds according to the context to speak with appropriate intonation according to the context Phonemes: 20 vowels 24 consonants Combination of sounds: camera: enable Sound linking: Was all of it eaten? Word stress: present vs present Rhythmic pattern: How did you manage to finish it? Weak forms: fish and chips Sentence stress: – Were you there last night? – No, John was there. Intonation: I beg your pardon. I beg your pardon? Common Mistakes in Pronunciation /i:/ 在词组、句子、语篇中的发音不能走样,不能缩短发音长度,而且要尽力保持口型。 When she called me last night, I was sleeping. When she called me last night, I was slipping. I want more heat. I want more hit. /?/发音时注音嘴唇向两边延展,向后拉,口型要控制住,不要和/ai/混淆。 The cat and kite are in the tree. Is the man really dead? Is the man really Dad? Can I use your pen? Can I use your pan? /?/音主要出现在非重读音节上,发音一定不要拖长。此外还应注意,很多中国学生喜欢在每个单词后面加上/?/音。如;good/?/, back/?/, bad/?/。 发/?/这个音时,口型不能过大,发音时不能夸张,不能向/a:/或/?/音趋近。例如;不能把bus发成bath或base. 有一个小窍门,即嘴唇做微笑状。 发/u/这个音时一定要短而急促,不要拖音。如不要念成g/u:/d, l/u:/ k等等。 /u:/这个音的长度一定要发够,要注意和/u/的比较。 the woman’s book, the cook’s boots, look at the fool, a new swimming pool, a new c
