Abstract: Describes the formation process and structure of the oxidation film on the surface of Mg alloy to
explain its tendency of corrosion, presents its corrosion mechanism, analyzes its unique negative difference
effect from three different view points and using a more reasonable theory as w ell, and introduces some pro
tection techniques for the improvement of corrosion resistance in the surface of Mg alloy, including anodic
oxidation w hich can provide good corrosion and abrasion resistances, laser aided treatment w hich can be ap
plied easily to the local surface for improvement, physical vapor deposition w hich can improve surface anti
corrosion, greater degree of crystallinity and better strength, and chemical treatment w here a developed RE
conversion coatings w ithout any toxicity can replace the harmful chromate protective film.
