Japanese Pop Culture——Otaku Culture(御宅族文化) What is Otaku? Otaku, meaning probably venerable house, refers to someone who has a devotion to a subject or hobby (not necessarily anime) to the point of not leaving home. It refers to somebody with an obsession, from anime, manga, videos games, computers to things like train sets, stamps etc. In a narrower sense, it is confined to a fan of ACG. Otakus are groups that have a wide knowledge about ACG and a deep understanding of them, and these people hardly go out unless for necessary activities. (ACG means Anime, Comics and Games) Otaku culture has developed into a pop culture. The base of Otakus is Akihabara or Akiba (秋叶原). Akiba-kei (秋叶原系) Akiba-kei is a Japanese slang term meaning Akihabara style. It dates back to the early 80s and refers to a subset of otaku. Now largely older males, who spend much of their time in and around the Akihabara area of Tokyo and are known for their strong interest in “fantasy worlds...anime, manga, maids, idols, and games.” Akiba is originally a street famous for electronic products, calling the electronic block(电器一条街). Since these okatus frequently buy products, nowadays the shops swift their goods from electronics to comics, anime books and game products. Images: usually obese with glasses and big bags. Reference ONLY What They Like Males(宅男) : 1. Collect various items related to their obsession, such as comic serials, games, garage kits (手办), derivatives(周边), clothes, cartoon figure models etc. chase newest cartoons cosplaying do Doujinshi (同人志) and share with other Otakus buy big dolls and treat the dolls as their lovers collect subcultural(次文化) products, such as guns and AVs What they like What they like 3. Voice fans(声优控): some otakus adore seiyuu(声优)’s voice much(恋声癖). Eg. Many males like the voice that sounds “萌”. They have their favorite voice actors; they also spare no efforts to collect the audios the seiyuu dubbed; they buy the CDs of their favorite voice actor
