Moon cakes Historical records show that moon cakes were first made in the shops of Chang ’an (present –day Xi’an) in the Tang Dynasty. By the time of the Ming Dynasty ,it became a custom for people to greet each other by way of exchanging moon cakes .In the Qing Dynasty, moon cakes were stuffed with walnut(核桃) paste, coconut 椰蓉paste ,lotus seed paste莲蓉, assorted fruit seeds and nuts, egg yolk蛋黄, chicken, ham or cassia 肉桂and date paste. The moon cakes of that time were more or less the same as the ones we have now. The ways of making moon cakes vary from place and their flavors and also not the same ,each with something special. The legend goes that Chang E, a beautiful lady ,swallowed an elixir stolen from her husband, Houyi (后羿a hero who killed nine suns) and flew to the cold moon, where she lived lonely with a white rabbit.
