Based on some articles abroad abo t Schl mbergers ARI and HALS, disc ssed herein are their operation prin
ciples, investigation characteristics, strong points and shortcomings, aswell as their applications in fract re and thin
formation eval ation and dip estimation. ARI and HALS, developed from traditional d al laterolog tool, can acq ire
more logging c rves witho t increasing more operations so to effectively identify inhomogeneo s formation s ch as
thin beds, fract res, etc. Azim thal resistivity meas rements are serio sly infl enced by tool eccentricity, ro gh
borehole, etc. Compared with FMI and SHDT, ARIs azim thal resol tion is lower, dip calc lation inacc rate, a
bility to identify both fract res and lithology poorer. Therefore, it sho ld be improved in parameter selection and
correction in dip comp tation. HALS has even more serio s borehole effect and shallower depth of investigation,
poorer azim thal resol tion than ARI. B t it has advantage over ARI in horizontal well logging beca se it is m ch
shorter than ARI. Analysis mentioned above showsthat ARI logging technology abroad is still in development.So we
sho ld find new ways to develop o rown ARI logging tools.
