List the means by which drug activity may be terminated OBJECTIVES 4. describe the biotransformation of drugs, its outcomes and clinical significance 5. describe the process involved in excretion of drugs and their clinical significance 6. state the factors which modify the onset, magnitude and duration of drug activity PHARMACOLOGY - is a science which deals with the knowledge of drugs - is the study of the manner in which the function of living systems is affected by chemical agents - is a science dealing with living systems and molecules especially chemicals introduced from outside the system DRUG • any substance or product that is used or intended to be used to modify or explore physiological systems or pathological states for the benefit of recipient (WHO) • any chemical agent that affect the process of living • does not confer any new property to the recipient, only alter the existing physiological / biochemical functions of the body Pharmacology comprises of two broad divisions Pharmacokinetics - how the body affects drugs (absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion)
