Unit 7 Word Stress in English What is ‘Word stress’? P.44: Word stress is the relative degree of force used in pronouncing the different syllables of a word of more than one syllable. How to pronounce word stress? When a syllable is stressed, it is pronounced longer in duration higher in pitch louder in volume An example: the word ‘teacher’ Degrees of word stress Primary stress主重音( ): e.g. /bisaid/ Secondary stress 次重音(%):e.g. /ig%z?mineiS?n/ Weak stress轻音 (unmarked):e.g. /bet?/ Exercises: P.45, 1-3 Stress patterns of two-element compounds(复合词) Examples: chairman, postman, first-class, second-hand, English teacher, evening paper Two stress patterns: 1. primary stress on the 1st component: postman, earth%quake 2. primary stress on the 2nd component: %first-class, forever.
