Heavy rain and landslides have killed 88 people in the past two weeks in Southwest China. It is the second year running that the region has been hit by disastrous floods. And water levels in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River were reported to have topped the warning marks in Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province, and Wuhan, Hubei Province. People around the two cities have got the alarm to cope with possible flooding, according to the Beijing-based State Flood Control Headquarters. Torrential downpours have hit western and southern Guizhou since June 12, dumping up to 300 millimetres of rain, destroying 8,700 houses, killing 88 and injuring another 300, said Hu Jianping, an official with the province’s Civil Affairs Bureau, by telephone yesterday. Reports say that more than 5,500 people were left homeless with over13,000 houses collapsed, according to the provincial Flood and Drought Combating Headquarters. In another development, landslides cut the four main rail lines linking the province with neighbouring Sichuan, Yunnan, Guangxi and Hunan provinces. Normal rail services have now resumed after emergency repairs, Hu said. Total economic loss caused by the floods has topped 350 million yuan (US$63.64million). The region has already spent 3 million yuan (US$550,000) on emergency relief.
