Methods Information of selected insomnia prescriptions was standardized, all Chinese medicine itemsets with support value 20% in insomnia prescriptions database were retrieved, association rules of Chinese medicine with confidence level 60% were mined. Results There were 18 core pairs of drugs with support value 20% and confidence level 60% were mined out. Moreover, 17 core groups of three drugs with support value 20% and confidence level 60% were mined out. Compatibility drugs in core pairs of drugs and core groups of drugs were Semen Ziziphi Spinosae, Ginseng, Angelica, Fu Shen, Ophiopogon, Polygalaceae, Licorice, Poria Cocos, Bozi, Rehmanniae Radix, Prepared Radix Rehmanniae, etc. Conclusion The core pairs of drugs and core groups of drugs were drug compatibility of reinforcing deficiency and tranquilization, which imply that reinforcing deficiency and tranquilization is the basic treatment for insomnia.
