A fluid-filled cyst occupies the middle of the spinal cord where most of the gray matter has been lost. The outer (continuous) line marks the circumference of the spinal cord; the inner (dotted) line surrounds the central cyst. The doughnut-like rim of tissue remaining at the injury epicenter is typical of traumatic injury, in which cell death occurs from the inside out.
