nasals / nasal consonants (鼻音) manner of articulation: In pronouncing nasals, the vocal tract / the mouth passage is closed at some point — the air stream is blocked in the mouth and comes out through the nose. There are three nasals in English. All of them are voiced. / m / , / n / , / N / nasals / nasal consonants (鼻音) / m / Put two lips together to close the mouth passage and let the air stream pass through the nose with voice. place of articulation: bilabial (双唇音) / n / Press the tip of the tongue against the upper alveolar / teeth ridge to close the mouth passage and let the air stream pass through the nose with voice. place of articulation: alveolar (齿龈音) / N / Put the back of the tongue against the soft palate / velum to close the mouth passage and let the air stream pass through the nose with voice. place of articulation: velar (软腭音) Lateral / Lateral consonant (舌侧音) / l / manner of articulation: In pronouncing the lateral, the passage of air through the mouth does not go in the usual way along the centre of the tongue; the air flow comes out from one or both sides of the tongue. Put the tip of the tongue against the upper alveolar / teeth ridge, lower (one or) both sides of the tongue, and let the voiced breath come out at the relaxed side(s) of the tongue. place of articulation: alveolar (齿龈音) clear (清晰) / l / : [ l ] leaf, let dark (含糊) / l / : [ 5 ] feel, tell, milk glides / semi-vowels / approximants (滑音/半元音) / j / , / w / manner of articulation: Each of the two consists of a quick and smooth glide towards a following vowel sound.
