Unit Eight;Brief introduction of the author;The author tries to illustrate that appetite is one of the main pleasures in life and we should preserve it. He even attributes the loss of appetite to part of the weariness of modern life and maintains that appetite can guard the happiness of and life would be a sort of death if we make our appetite too mach blunted.;;;I got mine once only, and it nearly killed me, and I’ve always preferred wanting to having since. ( Line 8) ⑴ got mine 指 got my heart’s desire，在句子中的意思是“我只曾一次让自己的欲望得到满足” ⑵prefer doing sth to doing sth 喜欢做某事（前），不喜欢做某事（后），句子中的意思是“我更愿意渴望而不是真正拥有”;Which is why I would carry the preservation of appetite to the extent of deliberate fasting… and over-doing it. ( Line 39) ⑴by表位置，“在近旁，在什么旁边” ⑵the wet smoke in their eyes,是独立结构，表伴随状态 ⑶三个并列句子，勾勒出饥饿难耐、惨兮兮的场景，与下文狂欢的场景形成鲜明对比;Very nice, but too much of it, too easy and regular, served up without effort or wanting. ( Line 45) ⑴Serve up: 上菜， 准备饭菜 ⑵省略主谓，主语完整的句子应该是cheap chicken and frozen peas (或they)are very nice…or wanting. ;It is a long time now since …a cup of cold water ( Line 54) 句中有两个that，前一个that用作形容词“那，那个”，后一个that是关系代词，引导定语从句，修饰bliss，解释巨大的幸福出现的场合。 句子主体部分it is a long time now since I knew …表示“我知道（某事）”这个动作一直持续到现在，“已有很长时间了”;
