Viruses, worms and Trojan horses can attack both data and operating system files. This is an increasing problem that will not go away. Some viruses will actually delete data files, important operating system files, and standard backup files kept on the hard drive. Rescue and Recovery stores your backups in a protected folder, so the backups can’t be deleted by an outside source. You or someone accessing your machine can accidentally delete an important file or files. You or someone accessing your machine can accidentally save over an import file or files. The Windows registry can become corrupted. Software can create a problem. The hard drive or a portion of the hard drives storage areas may become unusable. Complete hard drive failure is possible. * Student Notes: The main reason you would use the Rescue and Recovery preboot environment is to restore files or folders if you couldn’t get into Windows. Also, using Rescue and Recovery is the only way to recover IBM File and Folder Encryption (FFE）files. * Student Notes: While the Microsoft Recycle Bin is a good utility, it does not protect you from data loss.
