Abstract In the pre-Qin history of Chinese culture Chuang Tzu was always an ethereal figure, impoverished yet fully enjoying himself. With a gaping gap between his ideals and his real life, he remained to be the focus for various rounds of new researches. Uphold by a grandiose system of myths and allegories, Chuang Tzu represented his theory anchored in his own experiences with an approach of prototype Image and mythological thinking. As an adept orator Chuang Tzu had never lost a debate. In his masterpiece “Chuang Tzu”, however, he observed that debate is pointless. Then why did he keep on with it? Exploring the forming process of “Chuang Tzu” we would be struck by the paradoxical imageries in it. With a deeper dig we begin to wonder whether this paradox was rooted in Chuang Tzu’s thought itself. Deviating from the traditional notion of “Peripateticism”, the author tends to believe that Peripateticism is Chuang Tzu’s way to evade so that he could ramble around the world. Therefore this thesis tries to offer an analysis of the two paths consisting respectively of knowledge and virtue by which peripateticism leads to fleeing. “Peripateticism” is about rambling without destination or purpose. It could be pleasant as well as torturing. The ideal “peripateticism” that Chuang Tzu pursued is happy, self-satisfying. But peripateticism does not necessarily equal to happiness, nor does it engages optimism as later generation believed with their own wishful thinking. “Peripateticism” is just Chuang Tzu’s ideal living mode which is best regarded III as Chuang Tzu’s ideals rather than practical methods.
