A MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF LINEAR RELATIONSHIP
BETWEEN LEVEL OF URBANIZATION
AND TRANSPORT NETWORK CONNECTIVITY

Abstract:A new model on the relationship etw een the level of ur anization and connectivity of trans-
port netw orks is derived as β=Az +ζfrom Y .X.Zhou smodel on the logarithmic relationship e-
tween the level of ur anization (Z)and that of economic development ()and P.J .Taylor smodel
on the log-relation etween connectivity of transport netw ork (β)and the level of economic develop-
ment (x ), the former take the form of z =alnx-b and the latter can e w ritten as β=klnx +φ,
w here x is per capita GNP, x per capita income, percentage of population living in ur an place, and
β eta index, and A , ζ, a, b, k and φare all parameters related.In the process of mathematical
transformation, the linear relationship etween per capita income (x )and per capita output value (x )
w as proved and used.We have xx ,and the relationship is a key in the derivation.The new model is
tested and verified using the data on the ur anization level and railw ay network of China.Based on the
studiesut supra, an important conclusion can e reached that the construction of ur an systems and de-
velopment of transport network must e synchronized in order to consummate the geographica
