* The purpose of the Manual of Diagnostic Tests for Aquatic Animals (referred to hereafter as the Aquatic Manual) is to provide a uniform approach to the diagnosis of the diseases listed in the Aquatic Code, so that the requirements for health certification in connection with trade in aquatic animals and aquatic animal products, can be met. Although many publications exist on the diagnosis and control of aquatic animal diseases, the Aquatic Manual is a key document describing the methods that can be applied to the OIE-listed diseases in aquatic animal health laboratories all over the world, thus increasing efficiency and promoting improvements in aquatic animal health world-wide. Valid laboratory results are essential for diagnosis, surveillance and trade. Appropriate standards are achieved through the use of good management practices, valid test and calibration methods, proper technique, and quality assurance, all working together within a quality system. The need for mutual recognition of test results internationally led to the OIE’s published detailed standard which is based on ISO/IEC (International Organization for Standardization /International Electrochemical commission) quality system standard for lab accreditation. In order to ensure confidence in test results, at both national and international levels, test methods must be properly validated with respect to their intended application, and they must be performed under appropriate control by proficient laboratory analysts. In short, confidence requires that laboratories operate to a recognised standard of quality. * Standards have recommendations and guidelines.
