Introduction
The Sun Network Fllesystem(NFS) providestransparent, remote accessto mesystems. Unlike
many other remote rllesystemimplementationsunder UNIXt, the NFS is designedto be easily
portable to other operatin systems and machine architectures. It uses an External Data
Representation(XDR) specification to descnoeprotocols in a machine and system independent
way. The NFS is implemented on top of a Remote ProcedureCall package (RPC) to help
simplify protocol definition, implementation, and maintenance.
In orderto build the NFS into the UNIX 4.2 kernel in a usertransparentway, we decided to add
a new interface to the kernel which separates generic mesystem operations from specific
mesystemimplement
