The early settlers had a harsh and cold winter when they first came to America, and they suffered a lot, but with the help of the Indians, they had a good harvest and they wanted to give thanks for all this. So they put aside a day for special celebration. This is how Thanksgiving began. 2. Why do people want to give thanks on this day? People want to give thanks on this particular day because they want to remember their earlier lives in North America. Thanksgiving Thanksgiving is an American holiday. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. People celebrate this day because they want to remember their earlier lives in North America. The early settlers came from Britain. They came to the new world because they wanted to practice their own religion in a land of freedom. So the early settlers were called Pilgrims. In the winter of 1620, the Pilgrims traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and arrived at Plymouth on a small ship called Mayflower. The first winter was very harsh and cold. Almost half of them died of hunger and cold. The friendly Indians came to help them. They taught the newcomers how to grow corn, catch fish, hunt for animals, and make simple huts for living in the wilderness. The Pilgrims were working
