Statement of the problem
There is a need for an achievement test to be administered at the end of a semester of English course for students in junior three. The main purpose is to establish how successful students have been in achieving the course objectives. Course objectives are expressed in ‘communicative’ terms. Language skills, including listening, reading and writing, must be covered in the test, but speaking is not taken into consideration because of certain limitations. Given the test takers are junior three students and will take part in the The English test of Senior School Entrance Exam in Beijing when they graduate, the test format and difficulty level is similar to the entrance test just mentioned. Backwash is not a serious consideration. The test must be brief (no more than 100 minutes in length), quick and easy to administer, score and interpret.
