Abstract Abstract This thesis is designed to analyze the meaning construction of puns in Guo Degang’s crosstalk from the cognitive linguistics by applying Conceptual Integration Theory which was put forward by Fauconnier and Turner, thus breaking the limits of the traditional researches about pun such as its definitions, features, classifications, rhetorical effects, comparison and translation between English and Chinese puns. By explaining the cognitive mechanism of the meaning construction process of it, the research offers a new perspective for Guo Degang’s crosstalk and the research of pun. In the meanwhile, it also tests the great explanatory power of the Conceptual Integration Theory and enriches the research on the Conceptual Integration Theory. During the research, two questions arise: 1) Why can puns in Guo Degang’s crosstalk achieve certain language effects such as humorous effects, thought-evoking effects? 2) How are puns in Guo Degang’s crosstalk used to achieve certain language effects in the meaning construction process? In exploring the answers to these questions, the research lays great emphasis on the study of the meaning construction process of puns in Guo Degang’s crosstalk from the perspective of the Conceptual Integration Theory. In order to facilitate the study, pun is classified into three types, namely phonetic pun, lexical pun and grammatical pun. While in the formation of pun there are three basic elements called a double context, a hinge and a trigger respectively, all of which are fundamental to pun.
