A highbrow enjoy the music of Beethovens or novels of Dostoievsky, but he does not derive much pleasure from jazz and thrillers which appeal to a lowbrow. Part Summary [4~5] However, the issue is that either highbrows or lowbrow began to realize it seems not just a matter of taste when it comes to an argument. Both parties have made every effort to set more objective standards than those of a simple personal preference. Part Summary [6~7] Accord to the standards set by lowbrows, they are more human and numerous and thus, they must be in the right. While Highbrows think they are the good few and thank God to have distinguished them from others. Part Summary [8~10 ] Neither of the two partys arguments hold water. It is not difficult to refute them. Part Summary [11] However, recently lowbrows have changed their standpoint and adopt towards highbrows the same attitude as highbrow have always adopted towards them. Each lowbrow now congratulates himself on being unique in his unlikeness to other men. Part Summary [12~18] In point of fact, the difference between highbrows and lowbrows is essentially quantitative, not qualitative. The life of the highbrow is comparatively fuller than that of the lowbrow. Part Summary [19~20] But the fact is that great numbers of people are so constituted or so brought up that they cannot get so much pleasure out of processes and experiences which result in a rich significant life.
