Abstract Portraits
Introduction
Abstract painting refers to a artistic style which gets rid of imitating the nature. Abstract paining emerged in the early 1900s and soon became the most popular and distinctive artistic style in the 20th century (Galenson, 2009). Scholars generally classify abstract painting into two categories. One is the geometrical abstraction or cold abstraction started from Cezanne’s theory and developed by Cubism, Constructionism, Neo-plasticism etc.; the other category is hot abstraction, which started from Gauguin’s artistic concept, and developed through Fauvism and Expressionism, and has certain tendency of Romanticism (Galenson, 2009).
No matter from school of abstract paining, people is always one of the main themes. Any abstract portrait contains unique aesthetic concept and spiritual value of artists, as well as the expression of human soul. This paper aims at analyzing artistic features and spiritual connotation of abstract portraits in the 20th century with portrait examples of three important artists: Pablo Picasso, Willem De Kooning and Inka Essenhigh.
2. Picasso’s The Young Ladies of Avignon and Kasiweile
Created in 1907 by Pablo Picasso, The Young Ladies of Avignon (Les Demoiselles dAvignon), 1907 was regarded as the first cubist work (Gikandi, 2003). In the next a few years, this painting even made French cubist art gain unprecedented development, even trigger much resonance in the fields of music, literature, stage design and dance.
