英语经典著作导读—Poetry Sonnet 18 by 郭珊 Contents William Shakespeare Sonnet 18 Line structure rhyme scheme A close reading of the poem Analysis of the theme William Shakespeare William Shakespeare (1564—1616), the famous dramatist and poet of English Renaissance, was born in Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire. His complete works include 37 plays, 2 narrative poems and 154 sonnets. Sonnet 18 Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate; Rough wind do shake the darling buds of may, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date; Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm’d; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature’s changing course untrimmed; But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st; Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. Line structure rhyme scheme What’s the line structure of this poem? Iambic pentameter What’s the rhyme scheme of this poem? It’s a fourteen-line poem, rhyming ABABCDCDEFEFGG. Close reading of the poem Shakespearean sonnets have their rigid pattern, with the first 12 lines of each piece divided into 3 quatrains and the last 2 lines a couplet, rhyming ABABCDCDEFEFGG. The first quatrain thee Archaic version of “you (宾格)” thou=you (主格); thy=your; thine=yours “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” Figure of speech: “And summer’s lease hath all too short a date” Meaning “summer has too short a time” What’s expressed in the first quatrain? In the first quatrain the poet praises the beauty of the lady (or a young man as some critics have insisted) he addresses as “thee” by comparing her with “a summer’s day.” The second quatrain “the eye of heaven” Figure of speech: Meaning “sun” “And every fair fro
