On February 15th 2002, a team of three experts from various Chinese research institutes was organized. Dr. Jiqiang Zhang served as the team leader and was responsible for the organization of the study. He was also responsible for writing the outline and the final summary of the study. Dr. Zhongyang Luo, a Professor at Zhejiang University, was responsible for the report on industrial uses of biomass resources, focusing on gasification and power generation. Ms. Xiangjun Yao, Director of the Institute of Energy and Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, was responsible for the survey on biomass resources. During the course of the study, three meetings were held in Beijing: Feb. 15, 2002. To define the project outline and divide tasks; March 15, 2002. Review of available information and to approve the table of contents and working schedule; July 31. Approval of the final draft. Due to limited resources, the study was conducted based on literature review and summary, no field study or laboratory testing was conducted. It was found that the information available on the subject was broad, but less quantitative than the team would have preferred. This is often the case with Chinese literature, however, the information gathered was sufficient to draw a number of important conclusions hence serving the purpose of this study: to inform WWF’s renewable energy program about the development of biomass energy technologies, the weaknesses of such technologies and the potential of further development.
