Owing to its unique era and region, Shanghai fashion has its special style, and it occupies an important position in the history of the deve- lopment of Chinese costumes. In the 1920s, Shanghai women’s preferred mode of dressing was The Qi Pao. Originally Qi Pao was a kind of dress worn by Manchurian women With full front and back. There were two reasons why many women Were fond of such a kind of dress:(1)economy and convenience; (2)beauty and a snug fit. At the beginning of the 1920s, the Qi Pao style had still not evolved into the Qi Dress at the end of the Qing Dynasty. However, the cuff soon began to be restrained and the embroidered side was not as broad as before. Till the end of the 1920s, influenced by European and American costume, the style of Qi Pao changed markedly. The length was reduced and the waistline was tightened. As Qi Pao became very popular during the 1930s in various places, it adopted the peculiarity of traditional western dress. It became a kind of Sino-western hybrid dress, which brought forth new ideas and changed continuously. Beginning from the 1940s, the style of Qi Pao tended towards neatness.This characteristic was reflected most of all during summer.
