The best way to find the method that works for you is to be aware of the effect of what you are doing; watch the person’s reactions. * How is observation data used If you are just starting out with safety observations, you will not want to be thinking about tracking trends for some time. As your program develops, however, and you begin to develop systems for safety observations at all levels, you can use data in different ways: You can reinforce positives by seeing and reacting to the things that are going well in the area. Monitoring becomes a joint verification that the agreed-upon plans are in place and functioning effectively. By making observations together, owners and contractors avoid misunderstandings. You can see problems you need to pay attention to. Both the owner and the contractor should be alert to any changes in scope, conditions, or work environment. A frequent cause of injury is when there has been some change in the work or procedure, but the safety work plan did not change, so following the original plan contributed to the injury. Safety observations provide an early warning system for detecting safety problems that are developing. You can assess your contractor/subcontractor personnel in regard to their skills, attention, and responsiveness to unsafe situations. This assessment will help you monitor adherence to contractual obligations with regard to safety, or to determine what training they need. Eventually, you can see trends, both in terms of whether safety is improving or worsening and in terms of where training is being attended to and where it is not.
