Comment on the theme The play attacks in the vices of capitalist society. prostitution. The play shocks the bourgeois audience by showing how prostitution houses are used as a way for exploitation, and for investment and money-making, in a capitalist society, not only by one who has been a prostitute herself , like Mrs. Warren, but by respectable aristocrats like Sir George Crofts. Then Shaw goes on to reveal that practically all the respectable capitalists carry on their exploitation in as dirty ways as the running of brothels. The fate of poor women from the labouring masses is also touched upon in the play. There are only two paths open for those poor women:either to be respectable and remain poor and miserable and eventually die of this poverty and misery, or to give up respectability and do what is immoral. But Shaw is under the delusion that petty and gradual reform will eventually do away with the evils of capitalism. This is shown through Vivie. The origin of the name: Pygmalion Pygmalion,King of Cyprus,was a famous sculptor.He made an ivory image of a woman so lovely that he fell in love with it.Every day he tried to make Galatea up in gold and purple,for that was the name he had given to this mistress of his heart.He embraced and kissed it,but it remained a statue.In despair he went to Aphrodites shrine for help.Offering rich sacrifice and sending up a passionate prayer,he begged the goddess to give him a wife as graceful as Galatea.Back home,he went straight up to the statue.Even as he gazed at it a change came over it.A
