and its Performance in the Windshear Episode
on 28 – 30 August 2004

Abstract
A Doppler LIDAR is used operationally at the Hong Kong International
Airport (HKIA) for windshear alerting service. To monitor the headwind
encountered by the aircraft along the glide paths of the airport, glide-path scans
have been implemented on the LIDAR since mid-2004. The present paper
introduces the windshear detection algorithm developed by the Observatory
based on the glide-path scans. It will also discuss the performance of the
algorithm in the windshear episode on 28 – 30 August 2004. On these three
days, under the influence of strong southerly winds blowing across Lantau
Island, the airflow was very much disturbed over the airport. There were
altogether 69 aircraft reports of significant windshear and 11 missed approaches.
Apart from typhoon days, this is the windshear episode with the largest number
of aircraft reports in August since the opening of HKIA. The glide-path scans
of the LIDAR are also found to reveal the transient and sporadic nature of the
windshear in this episode.
